Privacy Policy

Overview

Liminal Crates is designed to be local-first. Your music files, playlists, ratings, and play history stay on your devices. We do not operate a cloud music library and we do not require you to create an account to use the Windows desktop app (or the phone companion when that beta opens).

This policy describes what data the Liminal Crates desktop app, mobile companion, and this marketing website collect — and what we do not collect.

Who we are

Liminal Crates develops and distributes Liminal Crates. For privacy-related inquiries, contact privacy@liminal-crates.com.

Desktop app

The Windows desktop app stores data locally on your computer, including:

• Paths to audio files you add or import
• Track metadata (title, artist, album, genre, ratings, play counts, etc.)
• Playlists and smart-playlist rules
• Cached album artwork
• Application settings (equalizer, crossfade, watch folders, etc.)

This data is stored in your user profile (for example, %APPDATA%\Liminal Crates on Windows). The desktop app does not upload your library to our servers.

Mobile companion app (coming soon)

When the iOS and Android companions ship, they store data locally on your phone, including:

• Audio files synced or imported on the device
• Track metadata, playlists, and ratings
• Pairing information for your desktop (host address and sync token)
• Cached album artwork

The mobile app does not require a Liminal Crates account. Data is not sent to our cloud because we do not operate one.

Sync between your devices

When you pair the desktop app with the mobile companion, they communicate over your local network (Wi-Fi) or, when configured, a USB connection between your phone and computer. Sync traffic stays between your devices — it is not routed through Liminal Crates servers.

Pairing uses a short code displayed on your desktop. A sync token may be stored on your phone to reconnect. Protect your home network as you would for any local file-sharing service.

Third-party services

Liminal Crates may contact third parties only when you explicitly use related features:

• Apple App Store / Google Play— When phone apps ship via a store, that platform's terms and privacy policies apply to distribution.
• YouTube / yt-dlp (optional)— If you use optional URL import, requests go to YouTube (or similar) from your computer. We do not operate a download proxy. You are responsible for complying with those services' terms and copyright law.

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use advertising networks in the apps.

This website

The Liminal Crates marketing site (https://liminal-crates.com) is informational. We do not use advertising trackers or sell visitor data. We do not set non-essential cookies. Basic server logs (IP address, user agent, pages requested) may be collected by our hosting provider for security and operations — consult your host's policy if self-hosting.

Windows beta downloads are gated by access codes and served from our servers. If you join a phone waitlist, we store the email address you submit solely to invite you to that beta. We do not sell waitlist emails or use them for unrelated marketing. You can ask us to remove your address by contacting privacy@liminal-crates.com.

Children's privacy

Liminal Crates is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Your rights

Because your library lives on your devices, you control it directly. You can:

• Delete the app and remove local data at any time
• Export playlists (M3U) from the desktop app
• Unpair mobile devices from the Sync screen
• Clear the mobile library from Settings

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR or CCPA. Because we do not maintain a central account database, most requests can be fulfilled by deleting local app data. Contact privacy@liminal-crates.com for help.

Security

Sync is intended for trusted home networks. Use pairing codes only with computers you control. Keep your operating system and apps updated. We recommend code-signed installers when available.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when features change. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the current version. Continued use of Liminal Crates after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
